'Eulogy to the joy of singing'

This evening, June 11 2009, from 7 to 10 PM West Indonesia Time, Bogor Agricultural University Students Choir, Agria Swara, will perform their annual concert at Erasmus Huis, Jl. HR Rasuna Said Kav. S-3, Kuningan, South Jakarta. The theme of their concert is 'Eulogy to the Joy of Singing', which is dedicated to everyone they love. In this concert, they will sing sacred and international folksongs.

Arvin Zeinullah, the Music Director of this concert, has a bundle of experiences in being music director, music instructor, music conductor, both in Indonesia and abroad. He has taken the Agria Swara and other choir groups to a number of choir festivals in several countries, like Hungary. Next September, the group will go to Italy to participate in a student choir festival. In this annual concert, the piano will be played by Budi Cahyo Purnomo.

I am excited to watch this concert, because my son will be the soloist at one of the songs they will present.

Rumah Gadang

Rumah gadang merupakan rumah adat masyarakat yang bertempat tinggal di Sumatera Barat, atau dikenal dengan Minangkabau.

Arsitektur, konstruksi dan dekorasi interior dan eksterior, serta fungsi rumah gadang menggambarkan budaya dan nilai orang Minangkabau. Sebuah rumah gadang berfungsi sebagai tempat tinggal, ruangan untuk rapat-rapat keluarga, dan aktivitas-aktivitas seremonial.

Karena masyarakat Minangkabau merupakan masyarakat matrilineal, rumah gadang hanya dimiliki oleh perempuan dalam keluarga yang tinggal di rumah tersebut. Kepemilikan rumah gadang bersifat turun menurun dari ibu kepada anak perempuannya.

Rumah gadang memiliki atap melengkung yang disebut gonjong. Bentuk atapnya menyerupai tanduk kerbau. Dindingnya dipenuhi dengan ukiran bermotif flora. Sebenarnya rumah gadang merupakan rumah tinggal bersama beberapa keluarga inti. Namun kini rumah tinggal sebuah keluarga pun banyak yang menggunakan elemen-elemen arsitektur rumah gadang. Sebagai contoh, pada gambar terlihat rumah gadang yang terletak di Pandai Sikek, salah satu desa di Sumatera Barat. Di depan rumah gadang, terlihat dua buah rangkiang, yang berfungsi sebagai tempat untuk menyimpan padi.
